Staying in Paris for the week, Umbert had the chance to take back.
Having some coffees at one of his favorite places, the Café De Flore, he saw many people watching social networks or videos on their phone, all the time, even walking or in couples (each of them on their smart-phone).
Umbert loves technology, but also human interactions.
“When the heart is in alignment with the sun, there is nothing more beautiful,” Christian Bobin, poet.
Our times are very passionate, with a tech revolution taking step by step all that people used to.
And people don’t like change.
This adversity goes everywhere, through human interactions, behaviors, politic, friendship or at work.
Sometimes with excess, with the « I Love It » or « I hate it » state of mind.
Today? What should we do?
Umbert was walking through Saint-Germain Des Prés in Paris and saw this charming shop called Grim’art.
It remembers him the old times in France, and all the French culture and history.
It seems very touristic, but helped him questioning about What should we do?
So he started to compare the tech world to the artistic vibe that he feels in Saint Germain.
Checking his phone (he does as well), he saw this article from Le Monde (a famous French newspaper): « These people do not exist: welcome to the era of « fake faces », sorry this is in French, but I’m sure you understand that it is about the software StyleGAN creating fake people.
« Should this exist? », the podcast, Caterina Fake, startup founder.
As Daniel C. Dennett, the Austin B. Fletcher professor of philosophy and co-director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University, says in his article “WILL AI ACHIEVE CONSCIOUSNESS? WRONG QUESTION” in Wired:
The danger is the influence that these technologies can have on our decision-making processes.
Why not give the legislator the power to sanction companies that abuse it?
Already the media and other social networks mainly influence us because they manipulate us unconsciously, sometimes pushing some to death (example: false news, destruction of reputation).
In any case, the morality of bot, robots and AI is already in doubt.
Umbert wanted to continue his discoveries in the Latin Quarter of Paris, checking all the amazing bookstores, the passionate students from La Sorbonne.
Listening to Tim Ferris interview of Caterina Fake, he thought that she’s right: « Should this exist? ».
The designer and start-up founder Jesse Weaver states in his article “It’s Time for Digital Products to Start Empowering Us” in Medium:
Our obsession with the screen and technology gives us an impression of power and control, but also an addiction.
Would not it be more ethical to create technologies that help us while preserving our independence?
The ones who make us our decision-making power.
Then Umbert asked himself:
- When should we do this?
- For what?
Umbert thinks that:
- Yes, we should do this.
- When it will create more job that it destroys (btw this is a new trend in the tech industry).
- To improve people life and work, and also make this world better (for example in Africa).
Another question we can ask ourselves:
- Do we have to criticize technology?
- What to do to help people like it?
Caterina adds that the new gun X,Y,Z are engaged and want to know if the tech are properly used.
- Who builds it and why ?
Ethic will be crucial in company marketing.
« Things we do not know, we do not trust them. They no longer enter gestures, dreams. They escape. Hate eats them, silently, she feeds on them. », Christian Bobin, poet
Part of the answer may be in the new Federal Trade Commission task force in the US will review monopolistic behavior or acquisitions that have already been approved such as Facebook acquiring Instagram or What’s app, or Amazon taking a monopolistic position. It will try to eliminate antitrust practices in the technology sector.
We also see more and more politicians in the US taking care of this problem, which may be one of the next elections issues.
States including California have already passed some law like the California Consumer Privacy Act to protect consumers data.
Will it be enough?
What you must remember: technology could be embarrassing the first time, but when used correctly, it is to people advantage.
